작가 소개
백종관은 리서치와 아카이빙을 기반으로 한 실험적 영상 제작과 연구를 지속해오고 있다. 일상의 다양한 국면에서 마주치는 이미지와 사운드를 반복적으로 수집하고 그 기록/기억을 재맥락화하는 과정을 통해, 삶을 지배하는 구조들을 돌아보고 동시에 시각 매체 자체에 대해 사유하는 작업을 해나가고 있다. 대학에서 심리학과 전자공학을 공부하는 동안 틈틈이 16mm 필름과 비디오캠코더를 사용하여 습작을 만들기 시작했으며, 대학원에서 영화를 전공하기 시작한 2012년부터 본격적으로 작품 활동을 이어왔다. 크리스 마커 연구로 석사과정을 마쳤고, 졸업영화 <순환하는 밤>은 전주국제영화제 단편 부문 감독상, 서울독립영화제 심사위원상을 수상했으며 베니스, 파리, 베를린, 함부르크 등에서 전시 및 상영되었다. 2013년에 현대무용 워크숍을 수료하고 무용수로서 무대를 경험한 이후, 신체와 공간의 관계, 퍼포먼스의 재현을 테마로 한 작업을 병행해 왔고 서울국제건축영화제, 무용영화제, 도시건축비엔날레, 서울국제실험영화페스티벌 등을 통해 관련 작품을 소개하고 있다.

About the Artist
Jongkwan Paik works with experimental video production and studies based on research and archiving. By repeatedly collecting images and sounds encountered in various aspects of daily life and recontextualizing these records and memories, he creates works that examine the structures that govern our lives while contemplating the nature of visual media. While studying psychology and electronics at university, Paik began producing studies using 16mm film and camcorders. In 2012, after working in corporate human resources for three years, he entered graduate school to major in film studies and began producing artworks in earnest. He graduated from his master's course with a study of Chris Marker, while his thesis film, Cyclical Night, won the award for Best Direction of a Short Film at Jeonju International Film Festival and the Jury Prize at Seoul Independent Film Festival. Cyclical Night has been screened and exhibited at venues including Venice, Paris, Berlin and Hamburg. Since attending a contemporary dance workshop in 2013 and performing as a dancer, Paik has been producing works on themes of the relationship between the body and space, and the depiction of performance. His works have been featured at events including Seoul International Architecture Film Festival, Seoul Dance Film Festival, Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and EXiS.
